As you approach the magnificent Aharbal Waterfall, the distant rumble of the cascading water gradually transforms into a powerful roar. Surrounded by delightful picnic spots, this breathtaking waterfall is also the starting point for several exciting trekking routes. It is located about a 1½-hour drive from Srinagar, making it a popular destination for nature lovers and adventure enthusiasts.
Aharbal Waterfall is one of the most spectacular attractions in Kashmir. Its mesmerizing beauty captivates every visitor, drawing them closer to admire the magnificent cascade for hours. The waterfall, with a height of approximately 24.4 meters (80 feet), is formed by the Veshaw River (Vishav River) as it flows down from the Kungwattan area before eventually joining the Jhelum River (Vitasta) at Sangam, near the Bijbehara Bridge. The source of the Veshaw River is the beautiful Kounsarnag Lake.
Interestingly, Aharbal actually consists of two waterfalls. The main waterfall is followed by a smaller cascade located about 50 meters downstream, with a height of approximately 7 meters. The thunderous roar of the water combined with the mist rising from the falls creates a dramatic and unforgettable spectacle.
Apart from its natural beauty, the waterfall also has significant hydroelectric potential. It is estimated that the site could generate nearly 100 megawatts of hydroelectric power, making it an important resource for the region.
Aharbal Waterfall is located approximately 76 kilometers from Srinagar via the shorter route through Pulwama and Shopian. An alternative route passes through Khannabal and Kulgam, covering a distance of about 95 kilometers from Srinagar. From Shopian, the waterfall is approximately 16 kilometers away.
Visitors can reach the base of the waterfall by descending around 100 well-maintained, fenced steps from the parking area, providing safe and easy access to the viewpoint.
The surrounding area is being continuously developed by the Aharbal Development Authority. Facilities such as restaurants, tourist huts for overnight stays, tea stalls, landscaped picnic areas, and scenic viewpoints have been established to enhance the visitor experience.
The region is predominantly inhabited by Gujjar and Pahari-speaking communities, although many Kashmiri families also reside in and around Aharbal.
Just 3 kilometers from Shopian, near the village of Chowgam, a road branches off toward Bafliaz in the Poonch district. This historic route is known as the Mughal Road, one of the most scenic and historically significant highways connecting the Kashmir Valley with the Pir Panjal region.
