Agra – The City of Eternal Love

The beautiful city of Agra is located near India's national capital, Delhi, on the western banks of the Yamuna River. Known as the City of Love, Agra is one of India's most popular tourist destinations and an ideal getaway for couples from across India and around the world. The Taj Mahal, one of the UNESCO World Heritage Sites, is the city's most iconic landmark and remains a favorite destination for newly married couples and romantics alike.

Besides the breathtaking white marble Taj Mahal, Agra is home to several remarkable historical monuments and architectural masterpieces dating back to the Mughal era. Some of the must-visit attractions include Agra Fort, Fatehpur Sikri, and Akbar's Mausoleum at Sikandra.

Apart from these iconic landmarks, visitors can indulge in Agra's rich culinary heritage and admire its magnificent Persian-inspired architecture. A ride in the famous horse-drawn Tonga is a unique way to experience the city's old-world charm. Nature lovers can also enjoy a peaceful boat ride on the calm waters of the Chambal River, where they may spot a variety of exotic birds and wildlife.

The National Chambal Sanctuary is a paradise for birdwatchers, wildlife enthusiasts, and photographers. It is home to more than 316 species of birds, including the Greater Thick-knee, Indian Skimmer, Lapwing, and Small Pratincole. Another popular attraction is the Wildlife SOS Bear Rescue Centre, where rescued Sloth Bears, Asian Black Bears, and Asiatic Black Bears are rehabilitated after being rescued under the Wildlife Protection Act of India.

The best time to visit Agra is during Diwali, when the city is beautifully illuminated with colorful lights and festive decorations. During the Mughal era, Emperor Shah Jahan ruled Agra and commissioned the magnificent Taj Mahal in memory of his beloved wife, Mumtaz Mahal. If you visit during the wedding season, you may also witness spectacular fairytale-themed wedding celebrations that add to the city's romantic atmosphere.

Another architectural masterpiece is Fatehpur Sikri, the magnificent City of Victory, built by Emperor Akbar in the 16th century. Today, it is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is admired for its grand red sandstone architecture. Visitors can also enjoy a traditional Tonga ride around Akbar's Mausoleum in Sikandra, offering a nostalgic glimpse into the grandeur of the Mughal period.

No visit to Agra is complete without exploring the majestic Agra Fort, another UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the city's most significant historical monuments. Built primarily of red sandstone, the fort showcases magnificent Mughal architecture and offers panoramic views of the Taj Mahal. In the evening, visitors should not miss the spectacular Sound and Light Show at Agra Fort, which beautifully narrates the fascinating history of the Mughal Empire and the rich heritage of Agra.
