Surfing in Goa
Surfing in Goa—once considered unthinkable just a decade ago—has steadily gained popularity and is now one of the most exciting adventure activities on the Arabian Sea. North Goa is particularly suitable for surfing during the dry season, when the combination of uncrowded beaches, favorable winds, and gentle waves creates ideal conditions for both beginners and experienced surfers. The long stretches of coastline in North Goa often feel peaceful and secluded, making them perfect for learning and enjoying the sport. Several beaches offer consistent surf breaks that are suitable for all skill levels.
One of the best surfing spots is Ashwem Beach, where a scenic lagoon meets the Arabian Sea. Here, the waves form classic A-frame peaks, breaking gently over sandbanks and creating excellent conditions for beginners. In the morning, the waves typically range from 1 to 2 meters in height and can extend up to 50 meters in length. Occasionally, larger swells of around 2.5 meters provide exciting opportunities for more experienced surfers. Good surfing conditions can also be found along the beaches stretching from Morjim to Arambol.
Ashwem Beach is especially popular among first-time surfers because of its calm waters and safe learning environment. The well-known Banana Surf School, located at the Shanti Beach Club, has been offering professional surfing lessons since 2011.

A typical surfing lesson lasts around two hours and includes a brief introduction to surfing theory, beach practice, and supervised surfing sessions in the shallow waters near the shore. Banana Surf School operates throughout the winter season, from November to March, with daily lessons available.
