Elephant Safari Zones in Kaziranga National Park
Kaziranga National Park, also known as a “Hotspot of Biodiversity,” covers a total area of approximately 430 square kilometers. The park is divided into four zones, but elephant safaris are organized in only two zones: the Central or Kaziranga Range and the Western or Bagori Range.
Elephant safari timings and routes are decided by the park management. The park authorities reserve the right to change the timings and routes when necessary. Usually, guests prefer to take the safari in the Western Zone, where they have a better chance of getting a close view of the one-horned rhinoceros.
However, visitors should not form any assumptions about a particular zone, as all the zones take you into the heart of the park, and there is no “bad” zone. Every zone is unique in terms of its forests, grasslands, density of mammals and birds, land topography, terrain, and other natural features.
The Kaziranga Elephant Safari is conducted by the Forest Department in morning shifts. One shift is from 05:00 AM to 06:00 AM, and the other is from 06:00 AM to 07:00 AM.
Central Range or Kohora Range
The starting point of the Central Range is the Mihimukh Riding Tower. Guests can take an elephant safari in this range for a maximum of one hour.
The safari route passes through the Dagland and Foliomari areas. The designated safari route for the Central Range is:
Mihimukh – Kathpora – Daphlang – Diffolu River Bank – Mona Beel – Karasing – Back
Western Range or Bagori Range
The starting point of this popular zone is the Bagori Headquarters. Usually, guests prefer to take the safari in the Western Zone, where they have a chance to get a close view of the one-horned rhinoceros.
The designated safari route is:
Ongabeel – Rouman – Rajapukhuri – Monabeel – Back
Elephant Safari Booking Details
The elephant safari can be booked at the two centers located in the two safari zones: the Central Zone, also known as the Kaziranga Zone, at Kohora, and the Western Zone at Bagori.
At both centers, permits for elephant safaris can be obtained. The elephant safari is organized only in the morning and may operate in three one-hour shifts:
05:00 AM to 06:00 AM
06:00 AM to 07:00 AM
07:00 AM to 08:00 AM
The third shift, from 07:00 AM to 08:00 AM, is organized only when there are more tourists who cannot be accommodated in the earlier two shifts. Therefore, the third shift is optional and depends on the park authorities.
For elephant safaris in the Western Zone, safari permits can be obtained from the Range Office at Bagori. For elephant safaris in the Central Zone, permits can be obtained from the Centenary Convention Centre at Kohora.
The Western Zone is considered one of the preferred zones for elephant safaris, and many tourists choose this zone for the opportunity to enjoy the safari experience amid the dense forests and wildlife of Kaziranga.

Elephant Safari remains closed from 1st May to 30th October.

All safari booking procedures at Kaziranga National Park are managed according to the guidelines of the Forest Department of Kaziranga National Park.
