With terraced lawns, cascading fountains, bright flowerbeds, and panoramic views of the vast Dal Lake, the three Mughal gardens of Chesmashahi, Nishat and Shalimar were constructed back in the day for the pleasure of the Mughal emperors. These are also possibly the most well-maintained and litter-free gardens which you’ll find anywhere in the country. Plastics are prohibited and if you insist in taking any inside then you’ll be required to furnish a refundable deposit at the entrance. The best time to go is in the spring, when the flowers are in bloom, although the Mughal-era monuments within the gardens are worth exploring at any time.

Shalimar Bagh

The most popular Mughal garden in Srinagar, Shalimar Bagh features four terraces separated by water channels. The fourth terrace houses a pavilion of black marble pillars with engravings which was once a banquet hall for the emperors. Emperor Jehangir had it built for his wife Nur Jahan in 1616 and a second garden—Faiz Baksh—was later added to it. Popularly known as the garden of love, Shamilar Bagh is neatly divided by a canal lined with polished stones running through its centre.

Nishat Bagh

Bordering the banks of the Dal Lake, this 12-terrace garden has beautiful soaring chinars, blossoming plants and water canals flowing down the centre. The landscaped terraces start high up and last all the way down to the edge of the Dal Lake. This is the largest of the Mughal gardens and is also known as the 'garden of bliss.' With a stunning backdrop of the Zabarwan Mountains, its sprawling expanse houses ruins of buildings dating back to the Mughal period. There’s also a small spring behind the garden, known as Gopi Tirth which is the source of the crystal clear water.

cheshmashi Bagh

The third and smallest Mughal garden, located halfway up the Zabarwan Mountains on the way to Pari Mahal, literally translates into ‘royal spring.’ The garden got its name from a water spring located on the uppermost terrace. The design is much like that of a traditional Mughal garden, but has been modified to fit its location. Here too, you will find gardens of beautiful flowering plants and soaring cypress and chinar trees. Located just above Nehru Memorial Park, the spring here is believed to be endowed with curative properties.

Pari Mahal

This ancient monument over a hill is well preserved and is visible from Dal Lake area. This is located near Cheshma Shahi garden. It was constructed by Dara Shikoh, the eldest son of emperor Shah Jahan. There is beautiful garden in front of it.

Tulip Garden

Tulip season is March and April, other days this garden remains close. This is also known as Indira Gandhi Memorial Tulip garden. Close to Tulip garden is Botanical garden.
