If you want to cover Shimla in one day, start early by about 6 AM, head straightaway to Narkanda. Here you can visit Hatu peak, you will be able to see magnificent forest and an awesome view of the sunrise from the top. Visit Hatu temple where you can see wonderful wood carving. While coming back have your breakfast at Negi Dhaba at Narkanda.
While coming back go to Kufri - visit Zoo and some amusement parks if you like.
Later go to Kalyani Helipad, from here you can see breathtaking view of Shimla.
You can also go to Nature Reserve park at Dhalli. It is a must for nature lovers.
You should try to reach Indian Institute of Advance studies by 3PM, here have a guided tour for checking out the place which has historical importance. Also visit HP State Museum if you like. HP State Museum closes at 5.30PM and is closed on Mondays and Gazetted Holidays.
Finally spend the evening at the Mall Road and enjoy various cuisines.
